The Traffic Volume report is a general
summary of traffic volumes throughout the City of Lloydminster.
It is broken down into two sections - Automatic Counts and Manual
Counts. The data is used primarily for transportation planning
by Engineering Staff. The data is also available to other city
departments, commercial enterprises, government agencies, and the
general public. TOP

The Traffic Volume report is updated
annually. Typically, the data is collected throughout the
summer and fall, and the Report is updated and available by December
each year. TOP

Automatic traffic counts are obtained using
mechanical counters with air tubes. The air tubes are placed
directly on the roadway surface and can be arranged to count a
variety of traffic lanes and directions. The air tubes sense
the number of axles crossing at that particular location. The
machine automatically counts each axle and divides by two. This
type of count has a certain amount of error in that a vehicle with
more than two axles may get counted twice or three times, depending
on the number of axles. However, for transportation planning
and evaluation purposes, it is useful to consider a multi-axle
vehicle as being the same as two or three two-axle
vehicles. TOP

The City of Lloydminster has four portable
automatic tube counters and one permanent counter. The portable
counters can be moved and placed on virtually any roadway. The
permanent counter is located on 44 Street (Highway 16) between 50
Avenue and 52 Avenue and can count vehicles all year
round. TOP

The City of Lloydminster only uses the
automatic tube counters between the months of May and October, or as
long as there is no snow and ice on the roadways. The permanent
counter on 44 Street is used to collect data all year
round. TOP

Although there is no set pattern to where an
automatic counter is placed, the City of Lloydminster tries to ensure
the data on all of the major roadways are relatively up to date.
Also, whenever a new roadway, subdivision, or commercial development
is constructed, the City of Lloydminster may place counters in the
area to determine any change or new traffic patterns. TOP

Manual traffic counts are obtained by City
Employees (typically summer students/staff) who are stationed at an
intersection. These employees manually record all pedestrian
and vehicular movements within that particular intersection, and
separate vehicles into different vehicle classes, such as passenger
cars, single unit vehicles, semi-trailers, etc. The information
collected is used for many different transportation planning
activities, such as intersection improvements and traffic signal
warrants. TOP

Prior to the incorporation of automatic
counters in the early 1990's, the City of Lloydminster would conduct
manual traffic counts quite often and at a wide variety of locations
throughout the City. Today, manual traffic counts are conducted
much less often and typically on an "as requested" or
"as required" basis. In the year 2000, the City
conducted an above-average number of traffic counts as part of the
data collection required for the Transportation Master
Plan. TOP

Yes. The City of Lloydminster's
Engineering and Public Works Department keeps more detailed records
for almost all traffic counting that has been done over the past
decade. TOP
